Rotary Sarnia honours city mayor and fellow members Sarnia, ON, CDA/January 11, 2010 - The Rotary Club of Sarnia recently presented the city's mayor with the international organization's highest honour awarded at the club level, in recognition of his long-standing commitment to serve others across and beyond the community.
Mayor Mike Bradley was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the club at its President's Changeover Meeting, which marks its annual transition to a leadership team.
In presenting the prestigious award, outgoing club President Alison Mahon noted that Mayor Bradley has exemplified Rotary's ideals of “Service Above Self” throughout his close to 25 years of community service on city council.
Paul Harris Fellows are recognized for their service to others, which reflects Rotary International's humanitarian and educational aims on behalf of those in need locally and around the global. The fellowship is a worldwide honour, established more than 50 years ago in the name of Rotary International's founder.
"Mayor Bradley was selected to receive a Paul Harris Fellowship, because he works with all members of the community to build a better Sarnia for us all. We thank him for demonstrating in his life and vocation a commitment to helping persons in need, here and well beyond our city's borders," Mahon said.
Also at the meeting, Rotary club members paid special tribute to one of their own, naming Bill Hoad as 'Rotarian of the Year,' in appreciation for his considerable and ongoing contributions to the organization.
A member since 1980, Hoad has been particularly active during the past year, noted outgoing club President Alison Mahon, who presented him with a commemorative plaque. She said that Hoad had served on four committees, taking on leadership roles in both of the club's major Mackinac breakfast and TV auction fundraisers.
In addition, Hoad continued as a trustee of The Rotary Club of Sarnia Charitable Foundation, serving as that group's property committee chair. In that latter capacity, he helped manage the transfer of a portion of the club's property holdings to a third party, and led efforts to relocate the organization to new temporary offices.
"During the past year, Bill has managed millions of little details that most of us couldn't even imagine, and all in the interests of our club. I don’t know how we could have succeeded this past year without his considerable efforts," emphasized Mahon.
In concluding her year, Mahon presented certificates of appreciation to the following Rotarians:
- Brian Davidson, for his leadership in renewing the club's commitment to youth
- Marsha Davidson, for her commitment to advancing international understanding through the club's Youth Exchange Program
- Jim Edmunds, for his wise financial counsel and exploring all avenues to put 'Service Above Self'
- John Elliott, for his commitment to building a virtual network for the club
- Johnna Johansen, for her commitment to Rotary at the club and district levels
- Carolyn Leaver-Luciani, for her incredible talent for injecting merriment and enthusiasm in all avenues of service
- Mary McLeay, for her commitment to club service
- Alan and Gayle Nixon, for their devotion to an active fellowship and family program for the club and
- Jamie Pole, for his dedication to building Rotary through all avenues of service
The Rotary Club of Sarnia is supported by the activities of close to 80 members, who are local business and organization leaders that represent a variety of vocations. Continuing to live its motto, "Service above Self," the club maintains an active program, which focuses on special needs children, youth leadership development, community betterment, vocational ethics and international peace and aid.
