Rotary program opens door for world discovery by teens

Sarnia, ON/October 6, 2009 – The Rotary Club of Sarnia is actively seeking bright, motivated local secondary school students, who are ready to explore the world.

Local Grade 10 and Grade 12 student could be eligible to participate as a Rotary outbound exchange student, experiencing the culture and language of a foreign country during an 11-month stay with a host family. The program application deadline is October 15.

During the past 30 years, the Rotary Club of Sarnia has given more than 50 local secondary school students a life-changing experience, learning first-hand about other cultures – and more about themselves through Rotary International’s Youth Exchange Program.

With sponsorship and host families through Rotary clubs in Sarnia, across Lambton County and around the globe, the Rotary youth exchange program sends more than 8,000 teens to over 85 countries every year.

Exchange students must be between the ages of 16 and 18 and academically in the top third of their classes. Typically, they spend 11 months living with three or four families, learning about the culture, the language and the people of their host countries.

The goal of the Rotary program is to help bring the nations of the world closer together and foster international understanding and goodwill.

In recent years, secondary school students from Sarnia, Watford and Forest have participated in Rotary exchanges in Brazil, Taiwan, Germany and France. Exchange students from Germany, Brazil, Belgium and Switzerland have recently stayed with host families in Lambton County.

Students and parents interested in knowing more about outgoing Rotary International Youth Exchange Program opportunities for the upcoming year are invited to contact The Rotary Club of Sarnia, 519-490-1066, or email our office.
